I love space and space exploration which leads me to watch my fair share of documentaries on the topic so when I came across this picture taken by HiRISE onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter this morning I decided it was worth a post. That plus the fact that is was 43 degrees yesterday and my house is still like a damn furnace and its too hot for me to work. That plus there is nothing on TV and no gremlins that require my attention. That plus the fact that I am pretty dehydrated and slightly delirious.
This is a closeup of Mars approximately 400km from its North Pole. As you can see the sand on Mars is from basalt, which is a darkish gray color. The red comes from much smaller dust particles which settle everywhere. Now don't be too alarmed this is not as close up as it appears, that little puff of red smoke to the left of the very center of the image, just above the main line of coral looking Carbon Dioxide deposits is actually an avalanche that is taking place at the exact time of the photograph. Pretty remarkable stuff. For more info / hi-res picture click here
That kind of, but not really, leads me to an excuse to post this video from youtube by Carl Sagan regarding the Drake equation (no, not an equation about Drizzy)
In other news a free giveaway will take place in about a week so stay tuned!!!!
